Mexico received 3.88 million cruise tourists (passenger ships) in the first four months of 2024, an increase of 2.2% over the same period last year, and also recorded the arrival of 1,200 ships, informed this Sunday the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR).

The Riviera Maya, a paradisiacal destination on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, is famous for its crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and rich cultural heritage. However, there is an exceptional way to explore this region that is rapidly gaining popularity among tourists.

Cruises in the Riviera Maya generally arrive at the ports of Cozumel and Mahahual. From there, travelers can embark on excursions to destinations such as Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Cancun and the various parks of Xcaret. Each port offers a variety of activities and places to explore, making each port of call unique and unforgettable. In addition, some cruises also make stops in other nearby destinations such as Cancun or Isla Mujeres, further expanding the options for travelers. The Riviera Maya never ceases to amaze!

2023 closure for the ports of Cozumel and Mahahual

It is estimated that the ports of Cozumel and Mahahual will close 2023 with more than 5.5 million cruise ship visitors.

In Cozumel, 4,089,054 cruise passengers were officially registered aboard 1,156 ships, exceeding the 2022 figure by 38.9%, although still below its peak in 2019, which was 4.5 million travelers. This represents 12% less compared to the numbers prior to the health crisis, according to data from the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo).

On the other hand, in Mahahual, the cruise port in the south of Quintana Roo, the final figures for 2023 have not yet been published. However, as of November of that year, a total of 1.5 million cruise passengers had been registered in the Grand Costa Maya, which practically assures that between the two ports the number of cruise visitors will exceed 5.5 million.

This represents approximately 60% of the total number of cruise tourists nationwide. According to preliminary estimates, the 28 cruise ports monitored by the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) would have closed the year with 8.5 million tourists, half a million more than in November 2023.

Under this preliminary estimate, the two ports of Quintana Roo would contribute more than 60% of the total volume of cruise passengers registered in 2023. In 2022, the proportion was similar, with 6.6 million cruise passengers nationwide, of which 4.1 million docked in Cozumel and Mahahual, representing 62% of the total.

Finally, the recovery at the national level is evident, since if the 8.5 million tourists by the end of 2023 are confirmed.
