What is the Mayan Train?

The Mayan Train is a long-distance rail transportation infrastructure project that will connect the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. It is owned by the public company Olmeca-Maya-Mexica and will provide three services: passenger train, tourist train and freight train. The rail line aims to connect tourist destinations in the Caribbean with lesser-known sites inland, such as historic Mayan sites. The Tren Maya will have a length of 1554 kilometers, 20 stations, 1435 mm gauge, 690 kilometers of electrified track, a maximum speed of 176 km/h, an average speed of 120 km/h, two lines and a Tsíimin K’áak fleet. The project, which was presented to the governors of southeastern Mexico on September 10, 2018, expects to open to the public in December 2023. In turn, the Tren Maya will generate economic spillover, increase connectivity in the region, strengthen the region’s territorial planning and boost the tourism industry.

This infrastructure project will require an investment of between 120 and 150 billion pesos, which will be obtained through a mixed investment scheme, that is, by the State and the private sector. This multi-million dollar investment is justified by the multiple benefits it will have for the region, such as the improvement of living conditions for the inhabitants, the reduction of marginalization, the increase in employment opportunities, the increase in security, the increase in economic revenue, the attraction of foreign investment and the possibility of creating new tourist flows.

Although the project will have great benefits for the region, it must also be taken into account that it may bring with it some negative effects, such as an increase in the urban sprawl of the surrounding areas, as well as the environmental impact it could cause. For this reason, studies have been carried out on the impact that the project will have on the ecosystems where it will be built, with the objective of protecting the surrounding archaeological zones, as well as guaranteeing the funds for the maintenance of this transportation.

What benefits does the Mayan Train provide?

The benefits provided by the Mayan Train include a better territorial organization of the region, a greater economic spill, an increase in connectivity, an increase in the probability of integration in the labor market, a 38% increase in employment of the native population, creation of 715,000 new jobs in the 16 municipalities with a train station, 150,000 jobs in the rural economy associated with the train, and 80, 000 new jobs with the construction works of the first five sections in 2020, a mixed investment between the State and the private sector, an increase in foreign investment, an improvement in the security of the places, a decrease in marginalization and backwardness of the inhabitants, an increase in tourism, an economic benefit from international tourist visits, and an increase in maintenance costs due to the high precision of the train.

Who is involved in the Tren Maya Project?

The Mayan Train Project is involving a variety of stakeholders. These include the Mexican Federal Government, the private sector, the five states involved (Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo, Chiapas and Tabasco), the Mexican Armed Forces, the Colegio de la Frontera Sur (Ecosur), the tourism industry and the indigenous peoples. Interested foreign companies include China and Germany. The objective of the project is to detonate the local economy through tourism and the improvement of the living conditions of the local inhabitants, with an estimated investment of between 120 and 150 billion pesos.

Section 5 of the Mayan Train was definitively suspended, according to the organization ‘Save me from the Train

The organization ‘Save Me from the Train’ has reacted enthusiastically to the resolution of the judges of the US Southern District Court of the Southern District of the United States to definitively cancel section 5 of the Mayan Train. Since February 6, 2023, when the temporary suspension of clearing in Section 5 was announced, they have demanded that the clearing be stopped and the environment be respected. After the suspension became a definitive suspension on February 7, 2023, the organization has committed to defend the environment and protect biodiversity in the region, and has celebrated this decision as a victory for the conservation of the Mayan ecosystem.

The new provisional suspension granted for Section 5 of the Tren Maya is to stop the clearing work on the route from Cancun to Tulum. This was granted by a Collegiate Court on January 18, 2023. This is in addition to the definitive suspension granted on February 6, 2023, which obliges the government to stop any logging or clearing work on the lands comprising Sections 5 South and 5 North of the Mayan Train, until the resolution of the injunction filed by inhabitants in that region.

Government denied “Save Me from the Train” for definitive suspension of the Mayan Train

Government officials have stated that the Tren Maya project is being carried out in a responsible manner, that the necessary studies are being done and that all measures have been taken to minimize environmental impact. President López Obrador has also insisted that the project is being carried out in a responsible manner and that the budget increase is necessary for its proper execution. The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Víctor Toledo, has defended the project by clarifying that no illegal logging has taken place, and the Undersecretary of Regional Development, Claudia Ruiz Massieu, has pointed out that the project incorporates the principles of sustainable development.
